Texas Coastal Waters Face 49-Knot Winds and High Seas From Corpus Christi to Rockport and Aransas Pass Until 2:00 AM CDT Monday May 11

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Special Marine Warning is in effect for Texas coastal waters affecting areas from Port Aransas to Matagorda Channel and from Baffin Bay to Port Aransas, with dangerous conditions expected through 2:00 AM CDT Monday, May 11.

The National Weather Service has issued this warning for coastal waters extending out to 20 nautical miles, with wind speeds of more than 49 knots creating hazardous conditions for anyone on or near the water.

What the Warning Covers

The Special Marine Warning covers two zones along the Texas Gulf Coast:

  • Coastal Waters from Port Aransas to Matagorda Channel out to 20 nautical miles — mariners in this zone should expect dangerous wind-driven seas and should seek safe harbor immediately.
  • Coastal Waters from Baffin Bay to Port Aransas out to 20 nautical miles — this zone includes waters near Corpus Christi, Rockport, Lamar and Aransas Pass, where conditions are equally dangerous through 2:00 AM CDT.

Wind and Wave Threat

Winds exceeding 49 knots (approximately 56 mph) are the primary danger driving this warning. Seas at this wind speed can capsize small vessels and make navigation extremely difficult even for experienced mariners.

Waterspouts are not expected with this event, but high seas remain the critical concern through the overnight hours.

Hail and Precipitation

Hail is possible with this system, though large hail is not expected at this time. Mariners should still remain alert to rapidly changing conditions across the warning area.

Safety Actions for Mariners

Anyone currently on the water between Baffin Bay, Port Aransas, Rockport, Lamar, Aransas Pass and Matagorda Channel should take the following steps immediately:

  • Seek safe harbor now and do not return to open water until the warning expires at 2:00 AM CDT Monday, May 11.
  • Monitor VHF weather radio channels for updates and any extensions to this warning.
  • If caught on the water, reduce speed, secure all loose gear and ensure all passengers are wearing life jackets.

Timing and Expiration

This Special Marine Warning remains active until 2:00 AM CDT on Monday, May 11. Conditions may improve after that time, but mariners should verify that the warning has been lifted before returning to coastal waters near Corpus Christi, Rockport, Aransas Pass and Lamar.
