Texas Mother Accused of Driving Drunk With Six Unbelted Children Crashes Into Pole While Speeding — Deputies Say She Was Already Due in Court for a Previous Wreck
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — A 31-year-old Texas mother is facing a long list of charges after deputies say she drove drunk with her six unrestrained children inside her SUV before crashing into a pole at high speed — all while she was already scheduled to appear in court for a different crash days later.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Brittany Winston, who now faces 14 felony charges tied to the weekend wreck. Deputies say none of the children, ages 2 to 12, were wearing seat belts when the Ford Explorer slammed into a pole along a major roadway on San Antonio’s east side.
Winston was detained on a $600,000 bond.
Six Children Injured, Including One in Critical Condition
Deputies responded around 1:40 p.m. Friday to Binz-Engleman Road, where Winston’s SUV was found “heavily damaged” with multiple injured children inside and outside the vehicle.
An incident report obtained by the San Antonio Express-News said Winston was traveling at a “high rate of speed” before drifting off the roadway.
All six children and Winston were transported to a hospital. Authorities later confirmed that an 11-year-old girl remained in critical condition, while the other children and Winston were released with non–life-threatening injuries.
Forensic investigators later confirmed:
“The vehicle was speeding over 20 mph above the 45 mph limit, and no occupants were wearing seat belts.”

Deputies Say She Was Intoxicated and Tested Positive for Controlled Substances
Investigators determined that Winston showed signs of intoxication at the scene. Hospital staff later reported that her blood alcohol content was above the legal limit, and she tested positive for controlled substances, though authorities have not yet specified which substances were detected.
Winston is charged with:
- 2 counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle
- 6 counts of injury to a child
- 6 counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury
Her first court appearance on these new charges is scheduled for February 25.
She Was Already Set to Appear in Court for a Previous Crash
According to local ABC affiliate KSAT, Winston was already due in court this Tuesday for a separate vehicle crash that occurred in November 2024. Court records also show her driver’s license had previously been revoked or suspended in 2013, before later being reinstated.
The new charges deepen concerns about Winston’s driving history and repeat offenses. Prosecutors say they are still working to determine exactly what led to Friday’s crash and whether additional charges may be filed.
A Preventable Tragedy That Could Change Everything
Investigators emphasized that every child in the vehicle was unrestrained, a factor they say significantly worsened the injuries.
Authorities say the case underscores ongoing issues with impaired driving, child safety restraints, and repeat offenders on Texas roads.
As of Monday, the investigation remains active, and additional forensic results are pending.
