Connecticut Woman Accused of Poisoning Husband Now Charged with Faking DNA Test by Using Her Nephew in Court-Ordered Paternity Exam

HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT — A 33-year-old Connecticut mother already accused of trying to poison her estranged husband with antifreeze is now facing new charges after investigators say she attempted to falsify a paternity test by using her nephew in place of her own son during a court-ordered DNA appointment.

Poisoning Allegations Sparked the Initial Criminal Case

According to earlier police reports, Kristen Hogan allegedly tried to poison her husband in August by slipping ethylene glycol, a primary chemical in antifreeze, into his wine and iced tea. Investigators say her husband fell severely ill and required hospitalization after consuming the drinks left for him in the refrigerator.

Hogan first denied involvement, but police say she later admitted to poisoning him amid what has been described as a bitter custody and separation dispute. That attempted murder case remains pending.

Private Investigators Reveal Nephew Was Used in DNA Test

Newly unsealed records outline a separate alleged scheme dating back to a court-ordered paternity test in April 2024.

Court documents state that Hogan claimed her husband was not the biological father of her two children. While earlier testing confirmed he fathered their daughter, paternity of their son had remained unresolved — prompting a formal test order.

Unbeknownst to Hogan, her husband had hired a private investigative firm to watch the exchange. Investigators say Hogan arrived at the lab not with her son — but with her nephew.

Surveillance footage, social media verification, and follow-up interviews confirmed the child she brought:

  • Looked identical to Hogan’s sister’s son
  • Was returned to the sister immediately after the appointment
  • Was heard calling Hogan’s sister “Mommy”

One investigator noted:

“The younger male child was observed and overheard addressing the subject’s sister as ‘Mommy.’ His words can be lip-read clearly on video.”

Investigators added that Hogan’s mother waited in the car during the appointment and was not aware of the alleged substitution.

Family Members Express Shock After Learning of the Alleged Ruse

According to the affidavit, Hogan’s sister was stunned to learn that her child had been used without her knowledge.

“She became angry… she has since had minimal contact with Kristen Hogan,” the investigator wrote.

A lawyer representing Hogan’s mother also said the older woman had no idea Hogan planned to bring her nephew in place of her son.

A former boyfriend of Hogan’s, who previously lived in the home with Hogan and her children, also confirmed that the child in the footage was the nephew, not Hogan’s son.

Judge Rules Hogan Lied Under Oath During Custody Proceedings

During a December 2024 hearing, the surveillance footage was shown in court. The presiding judge later ruled that Hogan “was not presenting a truthful testimony” regarding the paternity test.

Following the findings, Hogan was officially charged with:

  • Perjury
  • Tampering with evidence

Police say she turned herself in on Thursday and posted a $50,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 23.

Attempted Murder Case Still Looms

Hogan’s separate criminal case — alleging attempted murder for the antifreeze poisoning — remains active. According to the docket, her next court date in that matter is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2026.
