Florida Man Accused of Trying to Kill His 82-Year-Old Mother With a Frying Pan After She Developed Early Dementia
Coral Springs, Florida — A 53-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after police say he brutally attacked his elderly mother with a frying pan and tried to smother her inside their home, allegedly because he did not want to care for her as she began showing signs of early dementia.
Police: Son Admitted He Wanted His Mother Dead
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers were called to the home around 11:20 a.m. on Sunday after Keith Evan Woodward called authorities on himself, telling dispatchers that he had attacked his 82-year-old mother and was “going to hell” for what he had done.
Investigators say Woodward told police he wanted to kill his mother due to her early dementia diagnosis and her increasing need for constant assistance.
Attack Began After Mother Went to Lie Down
Before the assault, Woodward and his mother had reportedly been searching for a caretaker’s phone number. When she went to lie down in her bedroom, police say Woodward grabbed a frying pan from the kitchen, entered the room, and began striking her.
A violent struggle followed. According to the affidavit, Woodward climbed on top of her and attempted to smother her with pillows, while she fought back by pushing and pinching him and repeatedly yelling that she could not breathe.
Victim Escaped and Ran Outside for Help
The affidavit states that the 82-year-old woman managed to escape by sliding off the bed and running outside as her son chased after her. Woodward eventually stopped and, overwhelmed with guilt, called police to confess.
Responding paramedics found the victim alert and conscious, but suffering from severe bruising. Doctors were still assessing the full extent of her injuries at the time the report was filed.
Suspect Held Without Bond
Woodward was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Broward County Jail without bond. Court records show he is charged with attempted murder. Additional charges may follow depending on the outcome of the medical evaluation.
Community Shocked by Violence Against Vulnerable Elder
The disturbing details of the attack have raised questions about elder care, mental health, and the challenges families face when caring for aging relatives. Police have not reported any prior domestic incidents at the home.
Authorities say the victim is expected to remain hospitalized as medical teams continue to evaluate her condition.
