Winter Weather Advisory Expanded as Snow Spreads Across Texas Panhandle Into Oklahoma and North Texas

Amarillo, Texas — A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to include a large portion of the Texas Panhandle, western Oklahoma, and parts of North Texas, as snow continues to fall and travel conditions slowly worsen overnight. Forecasters are now calling for 1 to 4 inches of snow across much of the Panhandle, stretching south into Lubbock and east toward Oklahoma City and Lawton through Thursday morning.

Snow Already Falling in the Texas Panhandle

By late Wednesday evening, snow was already coating highways and rooftops across Amarillo, Pampa, and Dalhart, reducing visibility and creating slick roadways. The newest forecast models indicate that the heaviest snow will continue overnight into early Thursday, particularly in areas along and north of Interstate 40.

The National Weather Service in Amarillo reported multiple observations of light to moderate snowfall, with accumulations expected to range between 1–4 inches depending on elevation and localized snow bands. Travelers are urged to exercise caution as roads could become icy, especially during the early-morning commute.

Winter Weather Extends Into Oklahoma

As the system pushes east, the advisory now includes parts of western and central Oklahoma, with light snow reaching Oklahoma City, Norman, and Lawton by sunrise. Forecasters say that snowfall amounts in these areas will likely be lighter—generally around 1–2 inches—but strong north winds will make it feel significantly colder.

Officials caution that untreated roads and bridges could still develop thin layers of ice, especially in rural areas and elevated stretches of highway.

Rain and Drizzle for North Texas

Farther south, North Texas is not expected to see accumulating snow, but forecasters are warning of light rain and chilly drizzle, with temperatures remaining in the low 40s throughout the day on Thursday. Cities like Wichita Falls, Denton, and Fort Worth will see cold, damp conditions but no significant winter accumulation.

Residents should still prepare for slower travel, limited visibility, and the possibility of slick spots during the morning drive.

Cold Air Holds Through the Weekend

Behind this system, a pocket of Arctic air will settle across the Southern Plains, keeping temperatures well below average through the weekend. Highs across the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma may remain in the 30s, while North Texas will stay in the low 40s with persistent cloud cover.

Forecasters recommend that residents continue monitoring updates from local weather offices as the advisory remains in effect through Thursday at noon.
