North Carolina Man With HIV Sentenced After Admitting He Sprayed His Blood Into Hospital Workers’ Eyes Using IV as Weapon
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — A North Carolina man has been sentenced after admitting he ripped an IV from his arm and intentionally sprayed his blood into the eyes of hospital workers while being treated at a Raleigh medical facility, according to court records.
Defendant Pleads Guilty to Assault With a Deadly Weapon
Kameron Gilchrist, who was 25 years old at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the March attack at UNC Rex Hospital.
Court documents show Gilchrist was sentenced to 91 days in jail, with credit for time already served, meaning his sentence was considered complete at the time of the plea.
Attack Occurred During Medical Treatment
According to charging documents, Gilchrist was receiving treatment for diabetic-related issues when the assault occurred.
Police say he intentionally removed the IV from his arm and then aimed his blood at two hospital employees, one male and one female.
An arrest warrant stated:
“He aimed his HIV positive blood at the victims’ eyes.”
Court Records Describe Blood as ‘Deadly Weapon’
The formal statement of charges filed with Gilchrist’s plea agreement described the assault in stark terms.
“[Gilchrist] did unlawfully and willfully assault [the hospital workers] with a bodily fluid,” the document states.
It further noted:
“The defendant’s blood … contains a deadly communicable disease, HIV, a deadly weapon.”
Authorities said the exposure caused irritation and potential HIV exposure for both workers, though it has not been publicly confirmed whether either contracted the virus.
Felony Charges Reduced Under Plea Agreement
Gilchrist was initially charged with felony assault on emergency personnel, but those charges were resolved through the plea deal.
He was arrested in September, months after the incident, and was not immediately taken into custody due to ongoing medical and psychiatric treatment, according to local reports.
Hospital Officials Address Rising Violence
Officials with UNC Rex Hospital declined to comment directly on Gilchrist’s case due to the active investigation but acknowledged a troubling trend.
The hospital stated that violence against medical staff has been increasing, adding that protecting employee safety remains a top priority.
Hospital leadership said it continues working with security teams and law enforcement to prevent future incidents.
