Tennessee Teen Allegedly Beat Mother to Death With Baseball Bat, Burned Her Body With Stepfather, and Claimed She Left the Country, Deputies Say
LEWIS CHAPEL, TENNESSEE — An 18-year-old Tennessee man and his stepfather are facing murder charges after deputies say they brutally beat his mother to death with a baseball bat, burned her body in a backyard fire pit, and falsely claimed she had left the country. Authorities arrested Gabriel Vilchez, 18, and David Gardiner, 64, in the killing of 47-year-old Silvia Vilchez, whose remains were discovered two days after she was reported missing.
The Sequatchie County Sheriff’s Office said multiple callers reported Silvia missing on Oct. 28. When deputies questioned her son, Gabriel claimed that she had left the United States to return to her native Costa Rica. Detectives found that story suspicious — and within days, a horrific crime scene began to unfold.
Detectives Found Blood Stains ‘On All Four Walls’ of Home Office
When investigators searched the family’s home on Oct. 30 — located roughly 30 miles north of Chattanooga — they discovered a violent and disturbing scene inside the home office.
Detective Bryan Wilkie testified during a preliminary hearing that the room showed unmistakable evidence of a deadly attack.
“There were red-brown stains on the garbage, on all four walls,” Wilkie said. “There was blood on the desk, on the printer, on the baseboards, all over the walls.”
What investigators found next confirmed their worst suspicions.
Behind the home, deputies located a burn pit — and inside it, the remains of Silvia Vilchez.
Teen Allegedly Confessed; Stepfather Gave Contradictory Story
Authorities took both Gabriel Vilchez and David Gardiner into custody. According to investigators, Gabriel admitted to beating his mother to death with a baseball bat and claimed Gardiner also struck her during the attack. The pair then allegedly rolled her body in a carpet and dragged her outside to burn it.
“He stated they were out there all night long feeding wood on the fire to keep it burning,” Wilkie testified.
But Gardiner told detectives a completely different story. He insisted he had slept through the attack and the burning of the body, describing himself as a “heavy sleeper.” Prosecutors openly questioned that claim.
During the hearing, they asked Wilkie what a burning human body would smell like.
“It’s a pretty strong odor,” Wilkie replied — suggesting Gardiner would almost certainly have noticed it.
Investigators Still Searching for Motive
Authorities have not publicly released a motive for the killing. The brutal nature of the attack and the attempt to conceal the body have left investigators, prosecutors, and the community searching for answers.
Both suspects remain in custody. The judge ordered Gabriel Vilchez held without bond at the Sequatchie County Jail. David Gardiner is being held on a $250,000 bond. Their next court appearance is scheduled for January 30.
